Charity door to close on Volunteer of the Year? It was a bittersweet victory for Mens’ Resource Centre founder Jean Clayton when she was awarded Volunteer of the Year on Australia Day this year. At the same time that she was being recognised for her work in helping more than 10,000 men and their families over the past seven years, Jean also knew that the future of the Centre was hanging by a thread. Established in 2006, the Mens’ Resource Centre opens its doors to men from all walks of life and all trades and professions, and is there to help regardless of the crisis being faced. Unique in that it offers a range of services under the one roof, it has helped people such as John, who was suffering from major anger issues and suicidal tendencies when he went to the Centre in 2011: “I cannot praise the people at the Mens’ Resource Centre highly enough for what they have done for me. I feel one hundred percent better.” Or Bradley: “The help I received from the Mens’ Resource Centre was invaluable…men in my position need these resources very badly.” Or Ian, who says Jean helped him in what he now describes as his darkest hour: “She taught me to walk a different path. Four years later and the drugs are replaced with love, and the impending divorce with a real family.” But the Centre needs money and without it, the help cannot continue. There is no public funding and the sponsorship funds are due to run dry in August. Plans are underway for representation to both the state and federal governments for grants and/or funding, but in the meantime the Centre needs money to remain in operation. And that’s why there’s a sensational Retro Dinner and Dance being held at the Park Beach Surf Club Restaurant on Friday May 2. It’s a fund-raiser for the Mens’ Resource Centre but it’s also a chance for a great night out – the cost is $60 per person and that includes a three-course sit down meal and complimentary drink, plus lots of prizes, raffles, trivia, great music from the ‘70s and ‘80s and jokes galore from MC Nick Thomas, a former comedy writer.
