A huge array of exhibitors, workshops, demonstrations, art and performances will again be showcased at this year’s World Environment Day Festival in Boonah. This free event which celebrates and inspires sustainable communities, is presented by the Boonah Organisation for a Sustainable Shire (BOSS), and is happening this Saturday in Boonah. The global theme, set each year by the United Nations Environment Program relates very specifically to sustainability for 2015. The slogan is Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care. The event officially opens at 9.30am with a moving traditional acknowledgement smoking ceremony, before a day of fun and innovations for all the family. There’s free creative workshops for young and old, displays and demonstrations, live entertainment, and a huge assortment of artisan stalls featuring local organic produce, loads of plants and vintage and upcycled pallet furniture, jewellery, and fashion. This year’s free creative workshops include an African Drumming workshop with Elliott Orr of Talkin' The Drum. Elliott is one of Australia’s most respected djembe players. He’ll also teach the Junkyard Dogs Upcycled Marching Band a couple of rhythms and lead their parade around the grounds. These are open to everyone to join in. Other workshops include creating Cute Corky Companions and two Native Wildlife shows with Real Live Wildlife. Performances include the Ugarapul Aboriginal Dancers, and the Boonah and Logan Latin Dancers, as well as the popular Kirabatis dancers. Boom Boom Boonah, the local drumming community will also be performing. There'll be a big focus on food and food production with raw and fermented foods demonstrations, a permaculture display with live chooks and worms, as well as great composting, aquaponics and wicking bed displays, with many informed people happy to share their knowledge. The festival is a plastic bag free event, and we encourage visitors to bring their own bags or take advantage of the many stall holders providing great options in upcvcled bags, including ones made from chicken and horse feed bags, cement bags, denim jeans, and even baling twine. Bag making demonstrations and templates will provide support to help people make their own bags, and short documentaries will highlight the environmental damage, while together, it’s hoped that visitors can learn to understand how easy it is to make small changes to plastic bag habits. Some exciting upcycling will be on show with some amazing letter boxes, camp ovens and artwork created from local craftspeople from ‘waste’ materials. The family friendly day has something for everyone, including a great multi prize raffle featuring lots of sustainable prizes from our local and visiting businesses.
