YOUR SAY: Let's talk Sunshine Coast employment

THE hunt is on to connect employers with job seekers in the Daily's newest Job Blitz campaign.

The Coast's rate of youth unemployment sits unacceptably higher than the state average at 14.4%.

We've been working with Federal Minister for Fisher Mal Brough to launch this campaign.

We've also teamed with the  Salvation Army's SCILS program, MAX Solutions, local employers, and of course some young people, to discuss how we can both raise awareness of the issue and potentially use the campaign to create jobs.

Each Saturday we will profile some local jobseekers in the hope of connecting them with potential employers or educational paths.

Here's what you had to say about the jobs shortage issue on our Facebook page.

John Simmons: Not enough jobs out there as I have been trying to find a job for about nine months now. Most of them say that they want someone with the minimum of two years experience.

Alison Falcone: Our youth cannot compete when the farmers are permitted to employ backpackers and pay them 10% less than the Queensland award for that job position. No farmer is truly interested in paying a 'normal Aussie wage' when they are required to watch every cent they spend to keep their profits up.

Liz Stubbs: The key comment in this article is that most businesses on the Coast are family businesses - and so the jobs go to 'who you know' instead of due to 'what you know'. The biggest thing that would help is if family businesses, any employers, big and small, all made an effort to find out what government bonuses are on offer and made a really big effort to take on new staff. Even two to three days a week is a start for one young person.
Come on employers!

Krista Potter: Raising awareness doesn't create jobs -.- in an economy where small business is struggling and only big corporations get extra tax right offs... Blame the government for creating such a turbulent political situation which means people are not hiring unskilled or even skilled workers...
