X Factor’s Jess & Matt impress with twist on Grease classic

X FACTOR judge Guy Sebastian has come under fire for some of his song choices on the show.

But he surprised everyone including his own charges, Matt & Jess, tonight with a classic from Grease.

Sebastian was free to choose any song he wanted, without the restrictions of a theme, in the show's so-called "judges unleashed" week.

He challenged his duo to take on a reinterpreted version of You're The One That I Want, and the result was stunning.

"You're right, it is a bit random," Sebastian admitted.

Jess & Matt received a standing ovation for their modern, moody take on the upbeat love song.

"You made it look easy; that was so difficult that arrangement," Dannii Minogue said.

"You were equally shining in that in a way we haven't seen before."

While they certainly weren't the favourites going into the Top 12 live shows, the Sydney couple is shaping up as a strong grand final contender.

Louise Adams also had the judges spellbound with her powerful rendition of I Put A Spell On You.

Minogue called it grand final worthy and Sebastian said she deserved to make the Top 3.

Big T was back in tune after a misstep last week, singing John Legend's All Of You.

Sebastian called him a soulful brother, but recommended he find a few more soft moments in between hitting the high notes.

Instead it was Mahalia Simpson who sounded off-key at times in her performance of Macy Gray's I Try.

"I don't think it was your best performance... there were some dodgy moments," Sebastian said.

But with her parents flying in from New Zealand for the show, Simpson was smiling and looked like she had fun.

Cyrus Villanueva played piano in his rendition of Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do, a song choice inspired by his mentor Chris Isaak's encounter with Goulding at the AFL Grand Final.

"I'm really happy you took the hard way and not the easy way," Isaak said.

Host Luke Jacobz and Minogue, the only judge who served on the show's panel last year, also took a moment to pay tribute to former contestant Nathaniel O'Brien, who passed away yesterday after a car crash in South Australia.

"(He was) a beautiful person, a beautiful singer, a beautiful soul," Minogue said.
