Wild weather tipped for coastal regions

UPDATE 5PM: Heavy hail is falling across parts of the Sunshine Coast as severe thunderstorms sweep the region. Hail was reported in the Noosa Hinterland at Pomona and Boreen Point about 4.30pm.

EARLIER: Potentially severe storms are expected to hit the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay and Burnett this afternoon, with authorities warning of possible hail and damaging wind.

A low pressure trough hovering over the eastern Darling Downs, combined with high humidity and warm temperatures has created unstable conditions that Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Vinord Anand said could lead to thunderstorms.

"There's a chance some of those storms could be severe, given the setup," he said.

"There's the possibility of damaging wind gusts and a chance of hail as well."

The Wide Bay and Burnett are expected to be hardest hit, but Mr Anand said the potential for damaging storms further south on the Sunshine Coast could not be ruled out.

The forecast is for a cloudy day with an 80% chance of showers dropping up to 15mm of rain, and a maximum temperature of 27 degrees.

Mr Anand said a south-easterly change coming through on Wednesday would bring temperatures about two degrees below the November average, but clear and sunny skies through to Friday
