SINCE 2002, King's Easter Arts Festival has offered emerging artists a venue to showcase their work, offering Gold Coast residents a taste of Easter. The festival includes the art exhibition, plus two nights of performances, food trucks and family activities to celebrate Easter. This year the festival takes place on March 27 and 28 from 6-8.30pm. THE Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will be staged from April 4-15. It will be the first time the Games have been held in an Australian regional city and the fifth time Australia has staged the Commonwealth Games. GC2018 will be the largest sporting event held in Australia this decade, and the largest the Gold Coast has ever hosted. More than 6500 athletes and team officials will take part over the 11 days of competition, with 71 nations and territories represented across 17 different sports and para-sports. EXPERIENCE the kaleidoscopic perspectives of the Commonwealth at the Esplanade, Surfers Paradise, on April 6, in a night bursting with African hip hop beats, danceable ska rhythms and hauntingly beautiful voices. India's buoyant The Ska Vengers delivers a refreshing, energetic and highly danceable blend of ska rhythms, dub, punk, jazz and rap. Legendary award-winning Ghanaian rapper M.anifest plays with pure African grooves and current hip hop trends as he draws from his Ghanaian upbringing and his sojourns in the West. Australian musician and composer David Bridie, celebrated Papua New Guinean songman George Telek and other Tolai musicians present their unique collaboration, performing songs from the highly acclaimed album a Bit na Ta. SPIRIT OF CHURAKI
AN EPIC music production inspired by the story of Churaki, an indigenous man heralded as the Gold Coast's first surf lifesaver. Churaki, a Goodjingburra man, performed the first documented act of lifesaving on the Gold Coast in 1911. This was one of many daring rescues he carried out in the early 1900s as the surf bathing craze took hold. Starring an extraordinary line-up of legendary Australian musicians with evocative visuals by renowned artist Vernon Ah Kee, this production is a musical collaboration united by the spirit of the surf. Presented as a full night of entertainment on April 12 at the Esplanade, Surfers Paradise. The Spirit of Churaki rides the perfect wave between traditional ceremony, the ancient sounds of Aboriginal language and compelling music theatre, closing with a cyclonic set by Australian surf rock legends, The Break.
