Whale, Sharks feast on bait fish

Odd couple: Whale, sharks combine to spark feeding frenzy

A WHALE and a shark walk into a bar …

No, it's not the start of a joke but rather an unlikely pairing of dinner guests off the coast of Tuncurry on the mid-north coast of NSW.

Footage of the event shows a long whale cruising past a packed shoal of bait fish while a group of hungry sharks prepare for a feeding frenzy.

A close-up shot shows one shark penetrating the shoal, cruising in a patch of clear water amongst the dense, black mass as the frightened fish flee the large predator.

Among the animals spotted were white, bull and whaler sharks, while their mammal companion was identified as a Bryde's whale.

The footage, shot by aerial surveillance by the NSW Department of Primary industries, was taken between Seal Rocks and Nine Mile Beach.
