War-casualty evacuation plan brings home terrible truth
THE final guest speaker for Caloundra Family History Research in 2016 was Paul Sutton who gave a military presentation.
Paul spoke on "From Casualty to Hospital - A Soldier's Journey".
His interesting talk gave details of the British evacuation system during the First World War, which moved an injured soldier from the frontline to either a base hospital near the coast, or back to England for more intricate surgery and recuperation.
The system encompassed three sections: the Army responsible in the field, then subdivided into the Corps, then into Units, right back to the English Channel.
Stages included stretcher bearers at the fighting lines, Regimental Aid Posts with doctors, Field Ambulance Units taking patients to Dressing Stations, and then to the Casualty Clearing Stations and ultimately Base Hospitals at the ports, and those with major injuries finally shipping to England.
