Visitors love Lady Elliot
A BEAUTIFUL cay on the southern Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot Island's natural beauty and diving offerings has helped propel it to the number three pick of top island destinations.
The island, which is just a short 30-minute flight from Bundaberg, has been recognised in a recent poll highlighting the top 10 island destinations to visit in 2016.
Experience Oz marketing manager Matt Hobbs said Australia's Top 10 Destinations to Experience consumer poll's island category was a great opportunity to identify the best off-shore destinations to visit in Australia from the public point of view, rather than the simply "telling people where to go" approach other publications follow.
"Lady Elliot Island makes for one of the best value islands in the country with its high quality reef, and incredible diving and snorkelling opportunities with large manta rays, it's no surprise to see it ranked so highly," Mr Hobbs said.
"The island is accessible from multiple spots on the mainland, and is well worth the investment for time-poor travellers wanting a quality reef experience."
From a list of more than 40 nominees from around the country, the public voted Whitsunday Island as their favoured travel destination for 2016 beating out Lord Howe Island, NSW (10.5%), and in front of Lady Elliot Island, Qld (9.8%), Bribie Island, Qld (9.6%) and Hamilton Island, Qld (7.2%).
Experience Oz received more than 10,000 votes from a mixed audience of respondents from all over the country during the months leading up to the result.
Poll participants were asked to consider among other factors, its unique natural highlights, the area's cultural, historic and architectural features, the variety of activities on offer, and if it was simply considered objectively beautiful.
