Variety performers spice up life on pages of Seniors News
THE activities of the Variety Plus entertainment group have graced the pages of the Seniors Newspaper over the years.
The Gold Coast-based seniors’ entertainment group with five performers was featured in our June 2001 edition, right at the start of the Gold Coast/Tweed Seniors Newspaper.
Group founder Carmel Finn said the entertainers also appeared on page 14 of the inaugural edition, in a large colour ad for Ruby’s Buffet and bar, where they were performing.
"In the April 2005 edition, we appeared highlighting our lovely talented soprano, Joan Wright, on page 17 with the heading ‘Tiny Lady – big voice’," Carmel said.
"Joan had won her ninth Spotlight Theatre Annual Entertainers Festival award.
"We were very proud of this delightful, diminutive lady."
Variety Plus has been entertaining seniors in Gold Coast/Tweed areas for 20 years.
Retirements have reduced the group to three artists, all aged in their 80s.
"Over the years we have welcomed male and female vocalists, tap dancers, musicians with banjo, piano accordion, bagpipes, harmonica, guitar, penny whistle with colourful costume changes and humour," Carmel said.
"Our content provides nostalgia - the songs they know - plus other items such as country, Latin-American and themes of Irish, Scottish, English ‘Pearlies’, Aussie, etc.
"People say so many times when we finish the concerts, ‘we’re so glad you sang the old songs’.
"At our peak we performed well over 100 shows a year.
"We’re happy to scale down, because we’ve got wonderful memories.
"We get real pleasure and satisfaction in seeing the enjoyment and involvement of the audience.
"You can see their fingers tapping."
