IN SPORTING terms it would be called a crushing victory. A whitewash. A good old-fashioned thumping.
Toyota's sales dominance in Australia is as enduring as it is impressive, and it's only when you fully absorb the statistics you realise how very far ahead the Japanese giant is.
The holy grail - Australia's best selling car for 2015 - was taken out by Toyota's Corolla; its third straight title. Perhaps more telling however was Toyota's confirmation as our top-selling brand for a 13th consecutive year. And it is so far ahead. Toyota held 17.8% of the market in 2015, with Mazda the next closest at 9.9%. In unit terms, that's a staggering 92,212 more vehicle sales than the runner-up.
Toyota sold more than 206,000 new passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles last year, with Mazda scoring approximately 114,000, Holden 103,000 and Hyundai 102,000. Toyota's dominance wasn't any surprise of course, and its sales were 1.3% stronger than in 2014, but it should be noted second-placed Mazda was up an eyebrow--raising 13.2% over 2014.
Competition is fierce in Australia, certainly more so than just a few years ago when Toyota was even more dominant. In 2008 it held a 23.6% market share, dropping to 21.4% in 2009 and 20.7% in 2010.
But dominate it still does, thanks in a large part to Toyota's ever-strong fleet sales, plenty of good product across as many segments as possible, plus an emphasis on keeping the range fresh, as evidenced by 13 new or revised models arriving in 2015.
These newbies helped the company lead the market in nine segments in 2015. It topped the small car list (Corolla), medium size (Camry), sports car (86), large SUV (Prado), upper-large SUV (LandCruiser wagon), light bus and light van (HiAce), 4x2 and 4x4 pick-up/cab-chassis (HiLux).
And in case you were wondering, the domination is Australia wide. Toyota is the best selling-brand in every state and territory, while the HiLux has been Queensland's top-selling vehicle - bar none - for nine straight years.
