BEST way to make Toyota cool again?
Look to the past and recognise that the 1960s-1980s FJ LandCruisers were the high point of awesomeness.
The iconic off-roaders have been reincarnated in this FT-4X Concept seen at the New York auto show, and features wide black fenders, 18-inch wheels with all-season tyres, a multi-hatch tailgate, twin red hooks in the bumpers for anchor points and even a built-in GoPro camera for the driver-side mirror to capture your off-road action.
Interestingly, the 4.2-metre long concept's name - FT-4X - stands for Future Toyota 4WD Crossover, hinting that a production version may not be too far away.
With Toyota trying to sexy up its car designs somewhat - as seen on the new C-HR small crossover - an offering similar to this rugged FT-4X would surely go down very well indeed.
Toyota said the car would "add fun and value to casual adventures both in and out of the city."
Decent approach and departure angles and those knobbly tyres suggest it would be a decent tool on the rough stuff, and adventurers will appreciate twin boxes in the cargo area - one warm, the other cold - to store snacks, warm up gloves or cool ice packs.
Appreciated touches include a North Face sleeping bag fitted between the front seats to serve as an armrest, while there's a removable multimedia system as part of a boom box.
Toyota hinted that the FT-4X would employ a punchy four-cylinder engine combined with mechanical 4WD and selectable low range.
Seriously Toyota, here's my money, just start building them.
