The 1986 film, which followed students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school as they competed to be best in the class, was a huge commercial success and won an Oscar for the song Take My Breath Away.
According to IMDB, Val Kilmer will also return as Iceman, Jerry Bruckheimer will produce and Peter Craig and Justin Marks will write the screenplay.
It is unclear if any other original cast members such as Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards or Tim Robbins will also reprise their roles.
