1. APRIL 10

VIPs will attend a sod-turning ceremony at Point Danger from 11am to mark the start of a monument dedicated to all merchant seamen. Plans for the new memorial, which will be dedicated on September 3, will be on show. Members of the SE Qld Vindicatrix & MN Mariners Association have raised $25,000 over two-and- a-half years to erect the monument. Phone president Brian Hunt on 55130178.

THE Design Collective has announced a new open-air twilight food and produce market. The first Eat Make Grow Markets will be held on April 15 (Easter Saturday) from 3-9pm, and are set to become a regular seasonal event. The market site is at The Lakes Residences in Mermaid Waters, where Bermuda St meets Hooker Blvd. The Lanes site will transform into a regular foodie hub, with the Eat Make Grow markets to feature food stalls and trucks, a farmers' and makers' market plus live cooking demonstrations using local produce, crafts markets, artist displays, live music and family- friendly entertainment. www.thedesign collective markets.com.

HARD and Fast surveys the origins of abstraction, pop and colour field in Australian art. Gold Coast City Gallery's collection was established in 1968 at the height of abstractionism in Australia and amassed a superb collection that reflects this exciting art movement. The exhibition will also include examples from the next generation of artists who have been influenced by these movements. The line-up of artists include David Aspden, Col Jordan, John Coburn, Colin Lanceley, Ron Robertson-Swann, Robert Klippel and Peter Powditch. Hard and Fast is a free exhibition. IN A spectacular musical coup, the Gold Coast will welcome Peruvian salsa dura sensations Sabor y Control for the Easter weekend. For their first ever Australian performance, this sizzling ensemble, featuring more than 10 performers, will take the stage at Night Quarter on Saturday for a steamy night party. AUSTRALIAN electro pop goddesses The Veronicas will spearhead a star- studded line-up for the third LIVE festival. This festival transforms the centre of Surfers Paradise into a free, family-friendly multi-stage street festival with the iconic beach as the unique backdrop. The stages are on The Esplanade and in Cavill Ave over three days and nights. The Surfers Paradise Alliance has partnered with the Gold Coast Music Awards which will see the awards ceremony, which will take place on Surfers Paradise beach on the eve of the festival, April 27. GUANABA Charity Day selects a children's charity located on the Gold Coast and raises funds towards specific needs that they may have.
