Toowoomba woman shares her family’s cancer journey

YOUR STORY: When a robust, busy little six year old complains of a sore leg it would be easy to dismiss it as a bump or growing pains.

But when you notice a distinct decrease in activity then questions have to be asked.

This was the case when Toowoomba mother, wife and business owner Jo Capp was told her beautiful son Reid, had cancer. Reid was almost six years old.

"We were a busy young family. Our daughter was eight years old. We had a new business and the last thing on our mind was that our youngest child could be sick, let alone have cancer," Mrs Capp said.

"A journey of many downs and some ups followed and I started jotting down notes to help me cope with what Reid and the rest of our family was going through."

And eight years later, Jo Capp is the proud author of her book Four Hot Chips, which is being officially launched at Mater Dei Primary School this afternoon.

The book shares a truthful insight of how Jo coped with seeing her son suffer countless operations, chemotherapy and much sickness as a result of treatment.

Here's an excerpt:

As I walked to the car I started to cry, again. We left for our very first sad trip to Brisbane. This is a trip I can now do in my sleep. Staring out the window and avoiding conversation was how we made our way to Royal Children's Hospital.

However what makes this book really hit home is the honesty of how Jo recounts the struggles and deterioration of her marriage to David and the family unit.

"Most days of our journey were filled with frustration especially seeing so many other families in similar situations, this was terrifying," Mrs Capp said.

"I found writing about my journey one of the best healing mechanisms of dealing with our situation and I hope that it can help other families if faced with similar situations.

"We chose to officially launch Four Hot Chips at Mater Dei Primary School because of the support and help they gave to us during the journey. And I can't thank them enough for this."

The community is invited to attend the book launch at Mater Dei Primary School from 3.30pm today or at The Book Tree in Ruthven Street tomorrow Friday March 18 from 5:30pm.
