How this Toowoomba woman helped save 1200 lives
THROUGH a huge 400 blood donations, Toowoomba woman Sue Maurer has saved 1200 lives.
Ms Maurer made her milestone 400th donation donation this week, becoming the first woman in Toowoomba to do so and just the seventh woman in Queensland.
"I have been donating for about 43 years now," Ms Maurer said.
"I did about 100 donations with whole blood and it has only been the last 14 years that I have been giving plasma."
Ms Maurer now donates plasma every two weeks and through her role working in administration at Toowoomba Hospital, sees first-hand the people blood donations help.
"I always feel good after giving a donation. I get a good feeling inside because I can help people," she said.
Ms Maurer encouraged anyone who could to give blood.
"They can just try it once and see how they feel about it. They are lovely at the blood bank and concerned for your well-being."
Over 500 donations are needed in Toowoomba each week with plenty of appointments always available.
One in three people will need blood or blood products in their life and only one in 30 donates.
