IRRESPECTIVE of what brings over-50s to Caloundra, one thing is for sure; the migration of baby boomers to the area won't be slowing down anytime soon.
All the economic indicators point to decades more growth in population numbers and, with seniors living longer and healthier lives, the ageing will have more influence over our economy than ever before.
From a business and tourism point of view, it's great news that Caloundra has so much appeal to the over-50s. It's safe, clean and just an awesome community of which to be a part.
The great news for the over-50s, is that Caloundra's leading tourism and business groups, as well as Council, have spent a lot of time and money researching what services best cater to our seniors.
There is currently (and has been for some time) a coordinated effort to ensure Caloundra delivers the very best facilities for our active ageing population.
In 2013, focus groups identified safety and access to be fundamental requirements for an ageing community. Subsequently, the cornerstones of Caloundra's new street-scaping projects (soon to commence) include suitable bright lighting to parks and pedestrian walkways and a significant reduction in trip hazards beside roads and on footpaths.
Improved way-finding signs and a more extensive network of pathways will aid locals and visitors alike.
Bringing back the vibrancy of Caloundra's shopping precinct is priority Number One. Our historic and beautifully shaded main street is changing for the better. It seems that every few weeks a new café or specialty shop is opening in the CBD and the locals are discovering new reasons to venture into town.
Our award winning Caloundra Street Fair transforms Bulcock Street every Sunday morning. Twilight markets along the beachfront boardwalk over summer bring visitors in from all over the Coast.
As the new communities of Kawana and Caloundra South grow over the next two decades, the Caloundra CBD will play an all-important role as the region's lifestyle heart. Plans are afoot to build new residential-style apartments in the CBD precinct that will be accessible, affordable and convenient to all Caloundra's amenities.
Into the future, residents of Caloundra will continue to enjoy the balance of CBD convenience with the coastal ambience that typifies our surrounding beaches.
Not surprisingly, proximity to medical, allied health and wellness services have been identified as critical to an ageing population. Caloundra has an excellent public hospital as well as being near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital when it opens in 2016.
