The true delight of painting: an interview with Rod Parker

WINTER is coming and our latest paintings and painted porcelains are ready for viewing in the Atrium Gallery, Buderim.

Join local Painters for the Winter's Delight Art Expo - open 10am to 4pm from Friday May 20 to Wednesday May 25.

Our Painting Group meets on Monday mornings at the Buderim Craft Cottage. We have so many talented painters and artists, who all have different ways of expressing their art.

Maggie Fox is in our group and paints the Australian bush along with the misty hill scenery of Scotland and England.

James McCutcheon enjoys watercolours and paints local scenes as well as capturing some of the interesting views he finds on his travels in Italy and England.

Bob Mass is our pasteleer and has developed a wonderful style to enrich his landscapes in rich colours.

Some of our painters use new technology with digital cameras and the Internet to find locations to paint. The photographs are a great way to understand how a painter sees the world and inspire us to choose a place and an image as the subject for a painting.

There are many painting techniques and our group uses most methods - from oils to watercolours, from acrylics to pastels.

The Painting Group has friendly and helpful members. From beginners to long time painters we pitch in to help each other by organising activities and coaching new painters with support and advice. Both Olga Garner-Morris and myself have mentored the painters in different ways. Over the years, Olga has helped our members to prepare art for the retail and commercial art world.

Rod explained, "I started painting when I was about 7 years old, when my Mother gave me colouring pencils. I was drawing and colouring first before I painted."

"When I was 10 years old I entered the Australian Women's Weekly's annual calendar competition. I painted Australian wildflowers and animals for each of the 12 months. Although I did not win the competition, they sent me a lovely letter of congratulations and a cheque, wishing me all the best for the future."

Rod has a technical background in signwriting and graphic design, learnt at East Sydney Technical College, and understands Queensland's unique colours and tones.

"Its all about the colours of Queensland's grasses, trees, plants. Queensland colour is very different from the southern States with the deep blues and rich greens. In NSW, the dense eucalypts give off a blue-violet hue that gives the painter a cool palette of colour. Here in Queensland, the bright sunshine produces golden and gold-red hues. The landscape gives us a warm palette of colour."

"Overall getting the right balance in tone and colour is important if the painter is to reveal a realistic painting," Rod highlighted.

"However, there is a license to deviate from nature and to alter the painting rules to put your stamp on the painting."

With encouragement and understanding of colour, tone, composition and local conditions, our beginning painters can achieve outstanding results.
