The reset the Country needed.
Tony Abbott’s style of politics was never appropriate for the level of his position as leader of the opposition and then Prime Minister.
Such people have to be obvious leaders. People who will propose an idea eloquently, explain its benefits and be inclusive of others on the ride. Tony could not do any of that. Bluntly, he rose above his level of competence.
I am hoping that Malcolm Turnbull’s desire to run a proper Westminster Cabinet Government holds true. This is where Australia has been let down since KRudd was elected. Running the Country out of the PM’s office is not possible or practical.
Firstly, running everything yourself is too big a job and it would be impossible to be across all details. That is why you have Ministers of various departments. The Cabinet should set the tone of the Government and argue the contentious decisions on their merits. The role of Prime Minister should not be that of overall Minister for everything. Captains calls were a part of the reasons that dragged both KRudd and TA down.
Secondly, by taking on all decision making as PM, you are taking responsibility away from the very Ministers who could be making your life a little easier. While we like to bag our politicians, there are some very capable people out there in the Parliament. A good PM, being a good leader and manager, should be able to match the talent of their proposed Cabinet to the various Ministries and let them do their jobs.
Last night the Liberal party hit the reset button after five wasted years. I have been a staunch critic of their ridiculously inequitable policies but with a new leader and a slight correction of course to a more balanced and collaborative approach, I hope that a pleasant change may occur in Australian Politics.
