Take a selfie during discovery weekend to win

CELEBRATE and explore the hidden treasures that have shaped our region's rich history during the Heritage Discovery Weekend on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Heritage Discovery Weekend was an opportunity for the heritage industry to come together during the National Trust Heritage Festival and showcase the places and stories that make the Sunshine Coast so special.

"The importance that we attach to our 'heritage' is growing each year, and that is why events such as the Heritage Discovery Weekend are so important to allow people to access their local history," he said.

"The Discovery Weekend reminds us of the importance of learning about and then conserving and protecting our natural heritage, our rich Indigenous and European heritage and the diverse historic sites that help form our cultural identity.

"Whether it is Eumundi in the north, or Caloundra in the south and of course everywhere in between, there is so much to discover about the stories, people, places and objects that make up our past.

"And with more than 15 local museums and heritage places opening their doors over the weekend of April 30 and May 1 - there is a lot to explore. The weekend of celebration includes entertainment, vintage cars, quirky collections, tours and so much more.

"To add to the weekend of fun, we're inviting locals to create their own history by taking 'selfies' of their experiences and sharing them online to enter the Heritage Discovery Weekend photo competition.

"They will be in the running to win two tickets to an event at council's Lake Kawana Community Centre."

To enter simply take a 'selfie' at any participating Heritage Discovery Weekend museum or heritage site and share the photo on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #heritagesunshinecoast.

"The more entries, the more chances you have to win," Mr Jamieson said.

"So for a great weekend of fun organise a group, pack the camera and a picnic and head off to explore the region's fascinating museums and heritage places."
