Iconic seniors group for the over-45s, Sunshine 60 & Better Group Inc.(Sun 60), held an information stall at the Big Top Market Fresh at Ocean Street, Maroochydore on Wednesday, 25 November.

The Sun 60 belly dance group also performed two lively sessions at the Big Top Market Fresh in the morning. Members of the dance group range in age from sixty up to nearly eighty.

The dancers impressed a large group of spectators with their colourful costumes and their shimmying.

A number of people in the audience had specifically come to see our dancers and find out more about Sun 60 after reading about the event in local papers.

Information bags were handed out to shoppers and discussions were had about the benefits of being a member of Sun 60. The belly dancing group meets from 8:15am to 10:15 am on Tuesdays.

After ten years Sun 60 has moved from its office location at 10 Beach Road, Maroochydore. From Tuesday, 5 January the class will meet at the Kawana Family Centre at 50 Iluka Avenue, Buddina.

Julie Miqueaux the founder of the belly dance group stated that the usual comment made when someone suggests to a friend they might try a class is, "Oh no, I could never show my belly to anyone!" Julie's usual reply to this is that she has danced for fifteen years and that her belly is always covered.

Julie further said that the dance movements are gentle, the music delightful and the costumes are the best fun! Belly dance is a non-impact, weight-bearing exercise and is thus suitable for all ages.

It is a good exercise for the prevention of osteoporosis in older people. Dancing with a veil can also help build strength in the upper body, arm and shoulders. Belly dancing has traditionally been a dance for women, by women.

It is an expression of joy, celebration and self expression. If you think you might be interested in joining in come to a class. You may find an exercise that you can be really passionate about.

The classes cost only $3. There is also an annual membership fee of $10 for Sunshine 60 & Better Group Inc.
