Sun shines on walk in the park
YOUR STORY: After days of rain, the sun shone on Queens Park for the Parkinson's Walk in the Park on Sunday August 30.
Parkinson's sufferers and their families, friends and supporters totalled over a hundred as they walked together on the pathway through Queens Park to raise awareness of the disease.
Activities apart from the Walk included a great multi-draw raffle, a sausage sizzle provided by the West Toowoomba Lion's Club and a caffeine hit from Cruisin' Cappuccinos.
A local Tao Tai Chi Group also provided an entertaining display.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning.
The Toowoomba Parkinson's Support Group is one of over 50 support groups throughout Queensland who are affiliated with Parkinson's Queensland Inc (PQI).
All profits from the Walk were for PQI to assist in maintaining their efforts to provide awareness, support, advice, information, education, advocacy and research for sufferers throughout Queensland.
Parkinson's Disease is more common than leukemia and many cancers such as bowel and prostate.
After Alzheimer's, it is the next most common neurological disease.
In 2013 over 80 000 Australians had the disease.
Thirty people are diagnosed with the disease each day and 20% of these people are of working age.
Numbers have grown 17% in the last six years and costs by over 48%.
The money raised from the Walk in the Park is a small step towards the many that must be taken to find relief and, hopefully, eventually a cure for its many sufferers and their families.
