St Monica's School Oakey celebrates grandparents

YOUR STORY: This year's Catholic Education Week theme Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts. Serving Others. was embraced by the staff, parents and grandparents of St Monica's School, Oakey as the school recognised and celebrated the contribution grandparents make to the daily routine of the school.

Grandparents' Day was an opportunity to thank those special individuals, grandparents, who contribute to the smooth running of the school community.

Annie Murphy, Year 2 Teacher at St Monica's said, "Grandparents' Day is an opportunity for grandparents to come to the school, sit in the classrooms, and see how different today is from when they were at school."

"Classrooms today are filled with technology from interactive whiteboards, to iPads, to computers and laptops."

Visiting grandparents Brian and Lyn Jorgensen travelled from Westbrook and said of the day, "It is great to see what the grandkids are doing and to meet and mix with other grandparents."

"We have two grandkids at St Monica's, Emily and Sean, who are in Grade 5 and 3.

"Our eldest grandson, Josh completed his primary schooling here at St Monica's and has now gone to Downlands for his secondary schooling."

Principal of St Monica's School Roly Poulton said Grandparents' Day, "is an opportunity for us to acknowledge the role many grandparents play in the formative years of our students as they begin their life-long journeys."

"Grandparents are a key element of our community of care. Drop off and pick up times would not be the same without the gentle influence of grandparents," Mr Poulton said.
