Get into the Spirit of Byron 2018

ANYONE in need of some love, nurturing and personal transformation in a beautiful environment should book in to the Byron Spirit Festival.

Offering more than 60 workshops on yoga, dance, healing, sustainability and wellbeing, as well as uplifting world music concerts, the festival runs from April 20 to 22. Yoga and vocal coach Kathryn Riding has taught at several Byron Spirit festivals.

"It's always an inspiration and wonderful to share yoga with new friends, and to experience yoga with teachers from all over the world," she said.

"Yoga is becoming increasingly popular, it's true, and really there is no surprise.

"Yoga offers so many incredible benefits for body, mind and spirit.

"Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we learn from yoga is how to breathe fully and freely.

"Breathing consciously supports every system in the body. It oxygenates the blood, calms the mind and brings us into the present moment.

"And when we are present - not stuck in the past or worrying about the future - our body/mind can regain equanimity.

"We experience our true alignment with mother earth and the heavens above.

"We remember that the spirit of love and healing is always there - no matter how challenging our circumstances might be."

On a personal note, Kathryn has single-parented her son Jack, who has Asperger's, a developmental disorder on the autism spectrum characterised by difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication.

"The practise of yoga has offered so much support and peace of mind during this very challenging period," Kathryn said.

"Jack is now 20 and practises yoga himself and understands the benefits of conscious breathing to bring calm to his body and mind."

Kathryn is a poet and author, and has published two books - Under My Skin (Flamingo) and Yoga for the Body, Mind, Breath and Baby (ABC books).

She travels to Bali several times a year for her acclaimed retreats, and teaches at her studio in Brunswick Heads, New South Wales.

"I love living in the Northern Rivers for the blessing of the exquisite natural world that embraces us so beautifully," she said.

"I love that there is an emphasis on healthy, nourishing food and that we share a passion for conserving the beautiful environment that we live in."
