PELICAN WATERS GOLF CLUB - SUNSHINE COAST

Holes: 18

Meterage: 6359

Cost: $49 - $99*

WHY PLAY?

Pelican Waters Golf Club is a true test of nerve and patience. Architect Greg Norman has designed a magnificent and spectacular course that seems a perfect fit for a two-time British Open champion: A wide-open, almost links-type course that houses tight fairway which spell danger for any wayward shot. The challenge is to curb natural aggression and instead, methodically plan your attack and, when in position, go for the killer blow! Seems simple enough? Flick me your scorecard after you stare back down the 18th and wonder where all the strokes disappeared.

SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 8: Par-5, 512m

This is it! Your chance to make a precious birdie, a chance to mark a circle on the scorecard and show it off proudly to your playing companions. Think again. There are two ways to attack this hole: Pure power or meticulous playmaking. The power play brings the water all down the right immediately into play. Take the foot off the gas and it's a definite three-shot lay-up with little respite in sight. The decision is yours.

GAILES GOLF CLUB - BRISBANE

Holes: 18

Meterage: 6,245

Cost: $15 - $45*

WHY PLAY?

Gailes Golf Club feels like home - almost as if this course was built just for you. From the moment you step on the course, a calmness washes over you, a sensation that puts a smile on your face and kindles the dream: "Today I'm going to play the best round of my life!" The course is the perfect balance between length and precision - bad tee shots are rarely rewarded but there's always the chance of a shot at redemption. The property is ensnared by beautiful, giant gums, while some of the middle holes are lined with towering pine trees. Even the worst rounds are forgotten while the trees sing in the sunshine.

SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 1: Par-5, 482m

The perfect example of how to open a golf course. The tee shot is played over a blind hill with your ball (hopefully) sailing out of sight. But then, as you walk over the crest, the true beauty, and danger, of the hole becomes evident. All downhill, water to the right, out of bounds to the left, bunkers guarding bail-out spots and a green sloping from back to front awaiting over-hit shots: Who said par-5s were scoring holes?!

Cost: $59 - $120*

WHY PLAY?

Brookwater Golf and Country Club is Queensland's version of golfing heaven. Simple as that. The fairways are impeccable, the greens pure, the layout an adventure only a golfer can appreciate. And the surrounds? Truly unforgettable! The course weaves its way through a magical landscape of dense forest that calms the heart and lifts the soul. But forget about the nerves! SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 4: Par-5, 551m

Beware! Don't be lured into letting your guard down on this stunning hole. The view is truly magnificent from the tee, but just take one look, and then get to work! Tee shot selection is crucial with a valley splitting the fairway just beyond the landing zone of a well-hit driver. Manage to avoid that? You still need a cracking fairway wood, uphill, to reach anywhere near the green, which is guarded, back and front, by some scarily deep bunkers. On second thoughts, perhaps it's best to just remember the view!

Don’t be lured into letting your guard down on this stunning hole - the view may be magnificent but trouble lurks on every shot.

KEPERRA COUNTRY GOLF CLUB - BRISBANE

Holes: 27

Meterage: 6,082

Cost: $24 - $59*

WHY PLAY?

Keperra Country Golf Club is a sparkling jewel in the north-west suburbs of Brisbane. The course is spectacular to the eye - it's lush fairways lined by towering gums while idyllic ponds and streams meander through the property. The course is long, but also wide and forgiving, affording you the chance to rescue the round if you're not swinging free off the tee. The par-3s are beautiful and relaxing - most shaded by the surrounding forest and lapped by cool water (a refreshing view on a hot summer's day). But beware! Danger lurks even on the shortest of holes.

SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 8: Par-3, 135m

"Never change this hole." Those were the immortal words from the 'Golden Bear' himself - Jack Nicklaus - when he first set eyes on this short, stunning but extremely difficult hole. Water lurks on the right, left and behind the hole while the front is guarded by a large bunker. Oh, and don't be fooled by the still flag; get the ball high enough and the wind, held back by the trees on the tee, will sweep it into the hazard. You only have one choice - pick your club, take a deep breath and strike.

NOOSA SPRINGS - SUNSHINE COAST

Holes: 18

Meterage: 6,180

Cost: $65 - $120*

WHY PLAY?

Good golf courses - the truly good ones - somehow find a way to imbue the aura of the local surroundings into a player's round. And that's exactly what you'll find on the sun-drenched fairways of the Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort on the Sunshine Coast. A cool breeze always seems to blow through the lush tropical forests while the crystal blue water - and there is a lot of it! - shimmers like a sparkling gem. And the beach? Well, there is sand, but not the type you will be hoping to visit anytime soon.

SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 5: Par-4, 329m

It's so tantalising! One good drive, a short-iron into the green and you could be putting for birdie. What a dream! WAKE UP! This beautiful but perilous dog-leg par-4 is the quintessential risk-reward hole. The water down the right-hand side is the major hazard, dominating the line of sight from tee to green if you try to drive yourself to glory. Get this hole right and its happy days. Get it wrong and watch your round sink out of sight.

Noosa Springs' signature hole is so easy on the eye but make one mistake and your scorecard will feel the pain.

TOOWOOMBA GOLF CLUB MIDDLE RIDGE - TOOWOOMBA

Holes: 18

Meterage: 5953

Cost: $19 - $75*

WHY PLAY?

A light breeze blows across the lush fairway as the sun, warming up across a perfect blue sky, greets you on the approach to the first tee: The perfect day for golf. And the perfect course for it. Welcome to Australia's "premier inland golf course". Welcome to Toowoomba Golf Club. The course epitomises the great attributes of a country layout, with each hole offering a differing challenge from the last, and a scenic backdrop that will last in the memory long after you've driven back down the Great Dividing Range.

SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 7: Par-3, 123m

Who ever said the shorter the hole, the easier the score? This short, tricky par-3 will surely get the knees knocking as you stand over the ball. A large dam guards the entire front-left of the hole while a well-placed bunker off to the right and out of bounds at the back wait to gobble up any bail-out shot. It doesn't need to be said, but, precision is key. Good luck!

Lush, green fairways, trees swaying in the breeze, blue skies overhead - Toowoomba Golf Club Middle Range lays on the perfect day for golf.

SENIORS' SIGNATURE HOLE

Hole 12: Par-5, 508m

The first par-5 of the back nine builds the excitement and sends the adrenaline coursing through your body: Birdie chance! The drive is essential - anything left is wet and bunkers guard the right side of the fairway. Pass that test and your left with that age-old golf question: Do I go for the green in two? Anything right or long of the green will land in the lake and the green-side bunkers only offer a beautiful vista of those waters. The epitome of a risk-reward hole.
