First movie watched: The Sound of Music a clear winner

"THE hills are alive with the sound of music."

That line will instantly bring back fond memories for Seniors News readers with the immortal classic - The Sound of Music - the clear winner as the film they watched during their first visit to the cinemas.

Going to the cinemas for the first time is a special moment and we wanted to know what lit up that big screen as the curtains pulled back.

And our readers responded with the story of Julie Andrews' Maria, transforming the lives of the Von Trapp family, a magnet for then-young moviegoers.

But the five-time Oscar winning movie wasn't the only childhood film to get a vote or two.

Disney classics were well represented amongst our readers with Snow White, Bambi and Cinderella near the top of the list.

Magical nanny Mary Poppins - another Andrews film - rated highly as did Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Tarzan and Lassie.

And Elvis, the 'King of Rock and Roll', was no slouch either, with a variety of his titles racking up the votes.
