2016 Dragon Boat regatta season begins!

On the 9th and 10th of July the Cooloola Dragon Boat club held two days of Dragon Boat Racing on the waters of Snapper Creek in Tin Can Bay, with beautiful weather and over 450 paddlers for the weekend.

It was an amazing weekend of paddling.

Saturday saw the first round of the Wide Bay Series for 2016, which is competed between clubs from 1770, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Cooloola, with this year we welcomed Burnett River Dragons into the competition.

After every club competed in the 3 heats of 200mts and a Minor and Grand final, the winner of round one going to the team from team of 1770.

The afternoons racing was for the Diamond Dash for cash, which is raced on a Diamond shape course with 2 boats competing at the same time against the clock for the fastest time to get around the course. This year saw a record number of 16 teams competing and was open to all clubs in Queensland.

The crowd on the day absolutely got into this racing with lots of cheering for all clubs.

The winner of this event for 2016 was Redcliffe Red Dragons, 2nd Maroochy Sea Serpents, 3rd Cooloola Dragon Boat club.

Sundays event was competing for a place in the final in Division A, Division B and for the Dragon's Abreast ladies the "Carol Waitohi Trophy".

We had 21 teams from 13 clubs competing, and with some very strong and close racing over the entire day and great conditions on the water. Our winners for the day where Division A - 1st place Maroochy Sea Serpents A, 2nd Sunshine Coast Dragons, 3rd Place Burleigh Fire Dragons.

Division B - 1st place Redlands Sea Dragons, 2nd Place Lakers, 3rd Place Dragons Abreast Gold Coast. Carol Waitohi Trophy - 1st Place Maroochy Sea Serpents, 2nd Place Dragons Abreast Gold Coast, 3rd Place Redcliffe Red Dragons.
