Jared Coey still critical after Grafton skiing accident

A WATER-skier injured in Sunday's Bridge to Bridge race yesterday remained in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Gold Coast man Jared Coey was stabilised at Grafton Base Hospital yesterday before being airlifted to Brisbane by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

A very experienced skier, Mr Coey is understood to have to have completed the Bridge to Bridge race several times before.

He was being towed by super class contender Top Gun on Sunday when his ski appeared to catch under a ripple 100m before the finish line near the old Grafton Bowling Club.

The 27-year-old cart-wheeled across the Clarence River surface before hitting the water at considerable speed.

Spectators on the river bank who witnessed the accident were quick to dive in to the water and swim to save the injured competitor, who was unresponsive.

Mark Stephenson, secretary of the event organiser, Big River Ski Club, praised the efforts of those who rescued the skier from the water, including spectators who swam to the rescue.

"All our thoughts are with the family of the injured skier," he said.
