Simple ideas for brightening up your home

IT DOESN'T matter if you live in an apartment, retirement village house or large family home, these home refresher ideas will help make your home feel even more special to you.

1. Reflecting light can instantly make a room feel more spacious. Mirrors are an obvious choice to bounce light around a room. However, any reflective surface such as stainless steel in the kitchen or glossy surfaces in the bathroom will also do the trick.

2. Opt for 'floating' furniture design such as shelving, entertainment units and bedside tables or furniture with legs so that it is raised off the floor. This allows light to filter underneath making the room feel more spacious and airy.

3. Go monochromatic. Shades of one colour in a room creates cohesion and makes a room feel more open. To add interest incorporate a few textural elements.

4. Choose light colours for your walls and floor.  Unlike dark colours that tend to absorb light, light neutral shades will create a bright and airy feel to a room.

5. Find ways to draw the eyes up. Floor to ceiling curtains, bookshelves, vertically orientated wallpaper and extending the colour of your walls to include the ceiling  will create the illusion of higher ceilings.

6. Opt for larger pieces. Yes, that's right. One large sofa will make a room feel a lot bigger than having a few smaller seating options. The same goes for artwork - one large, bold painting has the ability to make a room feel more expansive unlike several smaller pieces that can clutter up a small space.

7.Choose or paint large furniture pieces to match the colour of your walls. This will help them to blend into the room and make them seem to disappear into the background. Cupboards?  What cupboards?

8. Think streamlined.  Clean lines and minimalist designs elongate a small space.  Opt for low storage that runs the length of a wall to make the most of every bit of space you have without overwhelming it.
