READERS DISCUSS: Should landlords allow pets?

WE asked our Facebook readers if they thought more landlords should relax the "no pets" rule for good tenants?

Over 60 people responded. Here are some responses:

Jennifer Moss: Family member owned a rental property that allowed tenants to have pets. Suppose to be outside dogs. The damage the dog did inside the house was thousands of dollars which the tenants' bond did not even come close to covering. I respect owners saying no pets as you never know what will happen.

Scott Ebert: I don't think landlords should decide whether or not a child has a pet! Just because someone rents doesn't mean landlords should deny the kids a pet, they can be good therapy for kids. Pets within reason obviously not 5 dogs and 5 cats but 1 or 2 won't hurt.

Anita Louise: Define good tenants? People are not always what they seem, it's their house and I respect that if they don't want tenants to have pets it's their choice.

Melanie Gourlay: I'm a landlord and we always allow outside pets, preferably with a good previous reference - some pet owners are not always responsible and bored dogs can do a lot of damage to a yard and bonds are not always enough to cover possible damage.

Peter Jaggard: I am a landlord and have always allowed pets. I am a pet lover and have loving pets so I feel others should have the ability to do the same. I have seen people that have had to get rid of their pets to be able to rent and that is not fair.

Melissa Putman: Tenants lie as well. I know some people renting, and they are allowed pets, maximum 2 dogs as they are in centre of town, but have more than 2 dogs, (and not friendly dogs either), but when ever the real estate have been contacted, they didn't want to know about it, because as long as they were concerned, they paid their rent on time !! Not sure if landlord was ever informed of the complaints either...

Betty-lou Fraser: With a good pet reference from previous landlords or real estate, yes

Wilian Sardinha: Absolutely!! Good tenants always will be a good tenant, with or without a pet!!

Kerry Lee: I wish landlords would allow pets - for the animals' sake. But I think that they have probably been burnt too many times by tenants.
