Shock as toddler's accused killer walks free on bail

THE teen accused of killing toddler Mason Lee has been set free despite an almost year-long battle by police to keep him locked up, five breaches of bail and fresh allegations he was present when the fatal blow was struck.

Ryan Robert Barry Hodson, now 18, was seen chatting casually with mates yesterday afternoon soon after being driven out of Wolston Correctional Centre following his successful bid for bail.

His release has outraged the Queensland Homicide Victims' Support Group, which will write to the State Government to plead for changes to bail legislation.

Hodson was charged with manslaughter, with Mason's mother Anne Marree Lee and her partner William Andrew O'Sullivan, after the 21-month-old died from severe injuries on June 11 last year in a case that shocked Queenslanders and sparked calls for child safety reform.

Hodson has indicated he intends to fight the charge.
