Shark technologies on show at North Coast forum

THE NSW Government will hold another public forum on the NSW North Coast to update the community on the rollout of the $16 million Shark Management Strategy.

Parliamentary Secretary for the North Coast Chris Gulaptis said the forum will be held on Tuesday 28 June 2016 in Lennox Head and will ensure the community remains up to date on shark interaction mitigation measures in their community.

"The NSW Government has made an important investment in shark interaction mitigation, particularly on the North Coast, and an important part of this strategy is to ensure we keep the community updated on how the technology trials are going as part of the Shark Management Strategy," Mr Gulaptis said.

"The community will also get a chance to ask the experts any questions about bather protection and shark attack mitigation measures, as well as view some of our technologies in person. Representatives from council will also be present, as well as SLS NSW."

Mr Gulaptis said drone trials in NSW have been successful, completing three trials in locations from Byron Bay to Port Macquarie and testing the technology's capabilities against traditional aerial surveillance.

"We are so impressed with how the drones perform, that we are about to partner with local operators to conduct trials of drones at Evans Head and Lake Macquarie in the coming weeks."

"In addition, we are continuing traditional aerial surveillance from Tweed to Ballina on both Saturdays and Sundays and on every day of the school holidays.

"Our tagging program also continues to have great success, so far 24 great white sharks have been tagged by NSW DPI and we've been able to track their movements to determine where they go.

"These 24 tags are on top of the 51 white sharks already tagged by CSIRO on the east coast.

These tagged sharks are able to be tracked by our network of 10 VR4G listening stations and transmitted immediately to our SharkSmart app and twitter @NSWSharkSmart.

"The forum will also provide an update to the community on the installation of the eco barriers at Lighthouse Beach, Ballina and Lennox Head which are set to commence shortly."

The North Coast Shark Forum will be held at the Lennox Head Cultural Centre on Tuesday 28 June 2016 from 6pm - 7.40pm.
