THE moment you slide in behind the wheel of your first car is a special occasion for any driver.

You take your time to let the sensation sink in; slide your hand across the dash, adjust and then re-adjust the mirrors, move your seat into that perfect position.

Then, you turn the key, the engine roars to life and, for the first time in your life, it seems the open road is all yours.

How we came to own that first car is a story that makes up a large piece of our history.

Some save, wait and save some more for that dream car while others jump at the chance at a second-hand bargain.

Then there are the tinkerers among us who pick up a bits and pieces here and there and craft their own road warrior.

Seniors News recently asked our readers what was the first car they purchased?

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

The overwhelming response was a roll-call of some of the most iconic cars in automotive history.

The Datsun 120Y was well represented, there was a range of Mazdas, Chevys, Austins, VWs and Hillman Hunters.

But the cars that kept popping up the list need no introduction: Holden and Ford.

The EH Holden was the most popular car amongst our readers, while the FJ Holden and FB Holden were strong choices.

The Ford Falcon also polled strongly, while the Cortina and Anglia made the list.
