School is in on the Scenic Rim

While the rest of the State is preparing to head back into the school classroom, Scouts from as far afield as Papua New Guinea have been welcomed into the outdoor classroom of Scouts Australia’s Second National Adventurous Activities School in Scenic Rim this week.

“We have started with looking at technical skills and basic knowledge in a low-risk environment,” said Phil Harrison, Deputy Principal of the Scouts Australia Institute of Training. “Then, we safely move the students into more challenging fieldwork and expeditions.”

As well as developing skills in young members, Scouts train older members and leaders as guides and instructors, Mr Harrison explained. “For example, our Mountain Biking course leader is a 25-year old Rover Scout who attended the Scouts National MTB workshop in May 2014 where his technical skills were examined. Now he’s developing his own role as a guide, applying what he has learned by assessing the students here, who range from 14-58 years of age. In effect, he’s running this activity as part of his own leadership development and we expect that his students will go on to do the same.”

“Scouts Queensland now owns a set of quality mountain bikes,” said Andrew Christodolou, a 43yo Cub Scout Leader from Jindalee in Brisbane who is doing Mountain Biking as one of his electives at the School. “Building our own skills up means we can get the youth members out and about in safety.”

Scouts Australia Institute of Training is a nationally-recognised Registered Training Organisation in the Vocational Education and Training sector.

Over 70 students and 40 trainers aged from 14 upwards have come from WA, Tasmania and PNG to various locations across the region for theory and fieldwork. “The Scenic Rim is an ideal location for the School,” said the principal of the School, Queensland’s Branch Commissioner in Adventurous Activities Russell Davie. “We are literally surrounded by mountains and waterways, rock faces and great facilities like the Department of Communities “The Outlook” at Boonah.
