Scouts Australia continues to lead in developing young citizens with its Second National Adventurous Activities School to be held in Queensland’s Scenic Rim over 9 days from 17-25 January 2015.

“We’re giving our leaders and senior youth members the chance to gain formal qualifications in outdoor recreation,” says the principal of the School, Queensland’s Branch Commissioner Adventurous Activities Russell Davie.

Over 70 students aged from 15 upwards will come from as far as Western Australia, Tasmania and Papua New Guinea to “The Outlook” at Boonah as the base for the theory and practical components of their courses. Practical fieldwork and expeditions will include:
• Canoeing and kayaking on Wyaralong Dam and the Brisbane River
• Abseiling, rock climbing and challenge ropes courses at Ripley, Minto Crags, Mt French and Boonah
• Archery at Roadvale, bushwalking at Mt Barney, mountain biking at Wyaralong

“Scouting leads the development of young Australians’ social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual character so they can be effective citizens locally, nationally and globally,” said Mr Davie. “The great outdoors is our best classroom. We don’t wrap kids in cotton-wool and parents want well-qualified leaders to deliver our programs effectively with the lowest possible risk.”

“Scenic Rim is an ideal location for the School,” Mr Davie said. “We have access to mountains and waterways, rock faces and great facilities like “The Outlook” at Boonah and bike trails at Mt Joyce.

Patrick Rice is a Rover Scout in Townsville who grew up in Beaudesert and who wants to learn skills in rock-climbing and mountain-biking. He hopes to support his studies with casual work in the industry. “This School is a fairly unique opportunity to get formal qualifications,” he said.

“Providing industry-recognised courses in Outdoor Recreation helps us deliver a quality youth development program and could lead our members to direct employment in the outdoor industry,” Mr Davie said.
