Sam Stosur says she can still win another major

TENNIS: Aussie Sam Stosur says she is still a chance to win another grand slam despite losing to Italian nemesis Flavia Pennetta in the fourth round at the US Open.

Stosur has not beaten Pennetta in seven attempts and has not reached a major semi-final since her US Open title defence in 2012.

Despite the 6-4 6-4 defeat, however, Stosur said she was happy with how she had played at Flushing Meadows.

"I want to try and keep playing at the level I've been able to play this week," Stosur said.

"I feel like my tennis has picked up. Yeah, I really want to try to keep it there.

"I've probably gone through stages this year of playing really quite well and then have big dips.

"I'm trying to avoid that happening again. I feel like I've put myself in a decent position now, won three matches here, played well today.

"I want to try to keep in that form."

Stosur was the last Australian in the singles tournaments and there are also no Brits left after a surprise defeat for Andy Murray and the end of Johanna Konta's remarkable run.

Murray went down 7-6 6-3 6-7 7-6 to South African 15th seed Kevin Anderson, who went through to his first quarter-final at a grand slam.

It was the first time Murray has not reached the last eight of a major since the 2010 US Open.

Anderson will now face No.5 seed Stan Wawrinka, who defeated US comeback king Donald Young 6-4 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Sydney-born Konta lost to women's fifth seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets 7-5 6-3.

Konta, 24, had only won one grand slam main draw match before arriving in New York this year.
