LONDONERS are primed to put a Muslim in power when they go to the polls on May 5 to elect a mayor.
The Labour Party's Sadiq Khan, 45, is enjoying a comfortable lead over Conservative Party candidate Zac Goldsmith and says he wants to defeat extremism.
"I want to use the experiences that I've got ... as a Londoner, as someone who's come into contact with people of odious views, to make sure we keep London safe," he told the ABC.
He has been an MP for 11 years.
Mr Goldsmith has questioned Mr Khan's "links" to Islamist extremists.
