Ricky Gervais lets rip with a beer in hand at Golden Globes

AS PROMISED, Ricky Gervais did not hold back in his opening monologue at today's Golden Globes.

Walking on stage with a beer in hand, the first thing Gervais did was tell the applauding audience to "shut up".

"I want to do this monologue and then go into hiding; not even Sean Penn will find me," he said.

The UK comedian let rip into everything from the Hollywood Foreign Press and the awards themselves to the Catholic Church, Caitlyn Jenner and the push for equal pay for women in the film industry.

He poked fun at claims some high-profile stars might skip the awards because of him.

"As if Hollywood stars would stay away from winning a golden globe…. particularly if their film company has already paid for it," he jibbed.

"If you do win tonight just remember on one else cares about it as much as you do.

"That award is, no offense, worthless... it's a nice bit of metal."

Interestingly, he did stay away from some of the higher profile nominees of the night like Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett.

Jennifer Lawrence took his joke about her well, but there were plenty of other celebrities who didn't look impressed.

Kate Winslet was surprised to win the first award of the night for her supporting role in the Steve Jobs biopic.
