READER'S VIEW: Make it easier to buy Australian products

THE major supermarkets here in Australia are making millions of dollars from Australian consumers by supplying the everyday products we all require in our households.

Now we have the Federal Government saying that a labelling scheme will be introduced so that all Australians will be aware of what percentage of Australian ingredients will be on display in these products.

The supermarkets should be made to isolate all products that are non-Australian by more identification so that the general public are made more aware of where these particular products are made by signs that we can all read and not the small print that require a magnifying glass to observe.

The responsibility should be on these supermarkets to make all Australian food stuffs the first point of call by their consumers. This token gesture by the Federal Government in labelling certain items is not the answer; it is a move in the right direction but nowhere near the changes required to help our elderly and others to be able to choose Australian-made products first.

I am aware that costs are the biggest influence on most consumers, but knowing where the aisles are that are all-Australian within these stores would be a major step forward.
