Readers tips for people doing their own tax returns

IT'S that time of year where we gather up all our receipts and our statements from various institutions and either head to an accountant or sit down in front our computers and pull out hairs.

That's right - it's tax time.

The Bulletin asked readers what their tips were for people doing their own tax and here are their suggestions:

  • Kimberly Dunbar - Don't. Be kind to yourself and pay a professional, then next year you can use the fee as a tax deduction (well they will on your behalf). Soooooo much less stressful!
  • Becky B Bowen - Its easy i have done mine every year and are always happy with the return
  • Ronald Girdler - Bash ur head against a wall... It hurts less...
  • Carol Boulton - DON'T DO IT!!!!
  • Wayne Forday - Be honest
  • Valarie Hawkins - if its straight forward ( you just earn so much and pay tax , no investments etc )then do it yourself
  • Kobe Barrett - Don't - I clicked on the wrong box and ended up paying a $900 admin fee after they audited my return.. Never again will I do it - the following year I got a massive return!
  • Debbie Bryant - Don't.
  • Chantal Booth - I used to do my own when i was a single girl with no additional extras. But for famolies ir small businesess, sole traders etc....don't risk it..there is so much you could get wrong and end up owing. Our accountant is Ian Knight at Knight Taxation. Awesome bloke.
  • Terry Grant - Pay someone else to do it.
  • Roz Woods - Don't
  • Diane Bassett - Don't!
  • Sharron Payne - It depend on the circumstances. Our tax is easy, only 1 income, so I do it myself. If we had a business I wouldn't even consider it.
