READERS DISCUSS: Wild dogs in Rockhampton suburbs

A ROCKHAMPTON woman is living in constant fear for her children after a "dingo" attacked her terrier while it was with her young daughter.

The woman said the Frenchville area had become so overrun with wild dogs it wasn't unusual to see them following a neighbour on his ride-on mower during the day.

The Bulletin asked readers on Facebook: Are wild dogs a problem in your area?

Nicole Berden - We had a Dingo out here at pink lily not to long ago. When it spotted us it took off.
Kerry Lee - Once they have been shot at they learn quickly and become very elusive. Someone's definitely had a go at this one. Not long ago saw a female with 3 half grown pups. One of the pups walked right up to us (about 15m away). Couple of months later (and after hearing gunshots), you couldn't get within a km of them.
Chantal Booth - Let me say right now that 99% of those things you are calling dingos....ARE NOT...they are infact CROSS BRED with domestic dogs making them more agressive and dangerousely fearless. These are FERAL WILD DOGS.
Kerry Lee - Another problem caused by irresponsible dog owners. These are wild dogs, the purebred dingo is virtually extinct. Years of interbreeding and incorrect culling methods have created a wild dog with different habits to the original dingo. The purebred dingo only breeds once a year. Where incomplete culling has occurred and the male is killed, and a female dingo remains, she will seek out a domestic dog to mate with. People dumping/abandoning their dogs add to the interbreeding problem. Years ago you couldn't get near a dingo, now they will virtually walk right up to you. This is wild dog behaviour, not dingo behaviour. Hence the inverted commas you see in the article. Just like a dangerous domestic dog, they will attack anything that they want to - they don't have to be hungry. We get a false sense of security living in suburbia, but we also have foxes and snakes, so your pets need to be in a secure enclosure and children need to be supervised.
Renee Cullen - Well if they are dingos then they were there before houses were built around there territory so therefore you all just need to be dingo smart. If these dingos had been there all along then they shouldnt of been aloud to develop in that area.

Should a bounty be introduced to help manage Rockhampton's wild dog problem?

Carmen Marsten - The dingoes around here now would be about as purebred as the Alsatian crossed ones in the dingo enclosure at the zoo
Daniel Oram - Dingoes have lived in the beserker ranges since before the archer bros arrived , it is the human being that is taking their living area . dont blame the dingo blame the humans and the people who allowed the development to be built there . they are pure bread dingoes.
Kerry Lee - Daniel, I doubt they would be pure bred. If they are - they would be very interesting to study scientifically and preservation would be foremost. It would be an amazing thing if they were 100% pure and I would be the first in line to protect and make sure they were managed to ensure their survival.
Debbie Maclean - Dingos teeth are different to dogs teeth. The main 2 grow down and finish with a hook. These are used for ripping and tearing.
Daniel Oram - I had worked near the ranges at night from 1989 until 2005 during this time i spoke to a dog person who was undertaking a study into the dingoes , yes some were cross bread but many were pure with the dominate traits being dingo
