READERS DISCUSS: Is the Coast truly a family-friendly spot?

THE Sunshine Coast did not make the cut as one of the country's most family friendly regions.   Perhaps more surprising than the Coast's omission from the list, was the reaction from residents.

Is the Coast really as family-friendly as we think?

Lonely Planet has released its list of the most family-friendly destinations in Australia.

Sydney Harbour came in number one while Touring Tasmania was second.

We were baffled how the Coast did not compare.

But it seemed readers were not surprised by the results.

We asked what you thought of the region's omission from the list.

Most of our Facebook readers said the Coast was "boring" and aside from beaches and movies there was not much else to do.

However, we've been digging up plenty of great activities for kids and including them in our daily School Holiday Guide.    Here's a snapshot of your debate:

You're joking. Sunshine Coast was left off the list of Australia's most family friendly holiday destinations. And you'll...

Chris Anderson: Depends if you're talking about daytime or nighttime

Madelaina White: The Sunshine Coast is boring. Plain and simple. I groaned every time my parents told me we were coming here. Living here is okay. But compared to all the other places it doesn't deserve to be on any list. No night life, almost entirely B grade attractions. No culture. Locals that hate tourists and do their very best to block any sort of development that could boost the tourism. You know who hurts the most? The young uni students and hospitality workers. As soon as school holidays end our hours are slashed and we have to skimp on everything. Struggle to find anything to rent because "young people are the enemy".

Melanie Russell Lyon: Pretty spot on I think. The Sunshine Coast isn't very entertaining. I very rarely choose to go there. I loved our family holiday to Darwin and will definitely go back there again. I haven't been to Sydney for a very long time but wouldnt mind taking the kids one day.

Jonathan Mark Hayden: Most certainly! Sunshine Coast is the best place to live and a wonderful place to visit.

Amber Westbury: I grew up on the Sunshine Coast and yes it has its positives, but if you're looking for a learning adventure, then Canberra has it all! I'd much prefer to take my children to learn about Australia's military history, l and pay our respects at the memorial, then experience a tour of the political hub of our country and view artworks that are some of the worlds best. And if you have a longer trip planned, why not travel two hours and go to the snow? The Coast most definitely has family-friendly holiday fun, but it can't top the nation's capital for all it offers.

Chen Hopwood: Sunshine Coast sucks for families. We have public parks that don't have public toilets(other than main beaches), most of the parks are not even that good either, most areas have barely any public car parking, we have over priced cinemas, poor road systems, poor internet(yes this does matter), no theme parks and the list goes on.

Ronny Schiebel: I like the Coast the way it is. We don't need or want a tourist boom. They can go down to Goldy as far as I am concerned. Love the "regional" lifestyle and people's mentality and wouldn't swap that for a few more hotels.
