He said while fluoridated water was also not a simple solution, it would significantly reduce the number of young children hospitalised for treatment.

The Bulletin asked readers on Facebook: Do you think we should fluoridate our water?

  • Karen Ferry - Our kids grew up on only tank water, toothpaste has fluoride in it. It all boils down to proper dental hygiene, not how much fluoridated water you drink.
  • Jill Harbeck - Parents need to clean their children's teeth , my children ( now in their 20's ) never had fluoride in their water and they both have beautiful teeth with no fillings
  • Lesley Barnes - Mine too, Jill. Brought up on rainwater
  • Jason Grant - The type of fluoride that is put into water supplies is a waste byproduct and does not contribute to dental hygiene. It causes more problems than benefits and is a way of mass poisoning and a way for them to dispose of it. Watch what's going into your kids mouths and teach them proper dental hygiene from a young age.
  • Ross Edwards - Completely untrue
  • Reuben Roberts - And Hitler is running the dental association of Australia....
  • Amy Shepherd - Kids being given too many sugary drinks! Do they know how many teaspoons of sugar are in softdrinks or juices? Eg juice for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea. That's about 16 teaspoons in one day. Then they eat muesli bars, sandwiches with Nutella and yogurts all in a day. Simply comes back to healthy eating, brushing your teeth correctly (toothpaste has fluoride in it)
  • Nicole Smith - What crap my dentist tells me it's all the sugar I have drank that has wrecked my teeth seriously kids r drinking juice soft drink and cordial that's where the sugar is and that's what rots their teeth nothing to do with the water
  • Paul Tyler - Unfortunately we have had a some space cadet members in our council and our community that have no idea on anything scientific - and as a result - NO FLUORIDE - I grew up in Adelaide where flouride has been in the water for over 50 years - I still have good teeth. If you think Fluoride in drinking water is dangerous you better not swin in the ocean because there is flouride in there to, Naturally produced. I put Anti Flouride people in the same basket as the Anti Vax clowns
  • Tamara Spilsbury  -High-5 to great parents who make sure their kids brush regularly and limit the sugar. I think this is more about helping the kids who have parents who don't understand/care about oral hygiene.
