READER DISCUSS: How do you rate parking at our university

THE University of the Sunshine Coast has unveiled its new $10 million multi-storey carpark this week.

The infrastructure is set to be a game-changer for the university which is growing bigger and better every year.

With more students and staff comes greater pressure on parking facilities.

This is where the new carpark kicks in to provide more space.

The facility, which contains 431 parking bays and has a further 84 bays surrounding it, was funded by a $5million gift to USC last year by philanthropist and property developer Roy Thompson and his wife, Nola, that was matched dollar-for-dollar by the University.

Its significance goes beyond just providing additional parking bays for the growing campus, as revenues raised from its operation in USC's regulated parking zone will fund the Thompson Excellence Scholarship scheme for high-achieving students and the Thompson Study Support Scholarship scheme for students in financial need.

A new $10 million multi-storey car park has opened at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Do you believe it will assist in alleviating parking problems?http://ow.ly/PCJgg

Just over half the respondents to a Daily online poll said they believed the carpark was a fantastic addition to the university which would assist in alleviating parking problems.

But our Facebook readers thought otherwise. Some said they were skeptical of the notion the carpark would solve parking woes.

Here's a snapshot of your debate:

Joshua Jager: 10 million for 430 car parks? That's $23,000 per car park. What waste

Jacqueline Eddison: Fantastic - after two years of paying for a car park I'll never park in... Still won't get a park, I bet you.

Emma Gilmour: Excellent, hopefully I can get a car park at uni next semester!

Byndy Stork:  Not just students, staff have to pay to park too and sessional staff have to pay to park while they attend lectures they don't get paid to attend... good one! Then get fined if they don't get back to the car quick enough - even if they are held up because they are assisting a student with work. Oh, and if you are thinking too much as you run from your car to the classroom to be there on time, but you're running late because you've been driving around for over 20 minutes waiting for a park, and you don't notice you punched two letters of your rego in the wrong way round at the ticket machine, even though the ticket describes the make, model and colour of the car, you still get a fine, with no recourse to explain the error.Tends to make one a little grumpy, when the local council is collecting fines on the back of the lack of spaces for parking - and if you lived near public transport you'd use it, but if you have to drive nearly an hour to get to the uni in the first place, well, chances are the buses don't run there.

Madelaina White: As a student, I still feel catching the bus to uni will result in me actually getting to class on time.

Travis Britton: I remember the good old days of getting bogged in the muddy grass.

Shazza Fair Sima: It will but as the uni builds and grows, parking will become an issue again.Need another one.
