TOYOTA has revealed its substantially upgraded RAV4 SUV to complete an incredible year of renewal for our market's biggest selling brand.
The arrival of the new RAV4 means Toyota has launched, replaced or renewed models representing three-quarters of its sales volume for 2015. In total, Toyota's revitalisation this year now sits at 13 models, including its three most popular vehicles - Camry, HiLux and Corolla hatch.
As for the RAV4 mid-size SUV, it has been gifted new exterior styling, refreshed interiors, upgraded engines and an available package of integrated active safety and driver assistance technologies.
Prices for automatic petrol models have been held or reduced, while manual versions see a price increase of $500. Prices for the turbo-diesel variants have risen between $1000 and $2000. The cheapest model is the 2.0-litre petrol GX 2WD for $27,990, and the range tops out with the 2.2-litre diesel Cruiser AWD at $49,490.
The new RAV4s receive restyled front and rear bumpers, wheel arch mouldings, a larger lower grille and slimline LED projector headlights alongside LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights.
There are new 18-inch wheel designs for the GXL and Cruiser, while three new colours arrive - Deep Red, Hazel and Blue Gem.
Inside the centre console has been redesigned, there's new matte black trim with contrasting silver accents and the GXL and Cruiser cars gain a new two-dial instrument cluster with 4.2-inch colour TFT (thin-film-transistor) multi-information display. Toyota said there's a more rigid rear body shell to give greater driving stability and improved ride quality, while shock absorbers and coil springs have also been revised for comfort.
Standard on Cruiser models is a suite of safety aids, including a Pre-Collision System with forward collision warning and automatic emergency brake, lane departure alert and dynamic radar cruise control.
These are available in an optional technical pack ($2500) for GXL models with CVT or auto transmissions, and also includes blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert and front parking sensors.
There are three four-cylinder engines on offer - a 107kW 2.0-litre petrol for the 2WD variants, or for the AWD RAV4s, you choose between a 132kW 2.5-litre petrol and 110kW/340Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.
There's a six-speed manual or seven-speed auto for the petrol 2WDs, a six-speed auto for the petrol AWDs and the diesel AWDs feature a six-speed manual or auto.
The RAV4 is now in its fourth generation, and Australian drivers have bought more than 248,000 of them since their 1994 launch.
