EDITORIAL: There's an RACQ ad playing on TV at the moment that's rubbing me the wrong way.

It shows a woman whose car breaks down on the way to a date and because she can't phone for a repairer, she misses meeting the man and ultimately ends up alone with multiple cats.

Then it shows the alternative: of her getting help from the RACQ repairman, making the date and finishing up married with a husband, two kids and just one cat.

I'm guessing it's meant to be funny and, at the risk of being judged as a shrew, I have to say, I'm not laughing.

I'm not down with implying that being a single woman is bad, a terrible fate to be avoided, and being a married woman is good and the ticket to a happy life.

Having been both, married and single, I know the truth is that both have their advantages and disadvantages.

It's okay for single women to joke and laugh about themselves becoming old cat (or dog) ladies, but when other people, or organisations, make fun of them, it's rude.

Unmarried women have enough to contend with in this world without having to deal with other people, and auto clubs, adding their judgment to the mix.

So leave it out, RACQ.

And anytime you want to stop airing that ad is ok by me.
