Qld centenarians set new world record

QUEENSLAND centenarians are looking to break the record for the world's largest gathering of people aged 100 years or more.

About 45 centenarians attended the early Christmas luncheon hosted by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in Brisbane today (November 4).

Attendees had travelled from across the state to attend, from as far away as Toowoomba, Julia Creek, Mackay, Caloundra and Ipswich.

The previous Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of centenarians is 31.

That record was set in May 2013 by the Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers in New Jersey, in the United States.

Ms Palaszczuk said: "Australia has an ageing population and putting in place effective policies, plans and frameworks to care for our ageing population is something I feel very strongly about."
