Increased demand leads to extra flights for Sunshine Coast

BREAKING: QantasLink will begin running four flights a day between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast during the Christmas school holidays.

Qantas regional manager for Queensland Elsa Dalessio said kicking off the Melbourne flights during a peak demand period would enable the airline to establish and grow its presence in that market.

The announcement of the boosted Qantas services comes about a year after the airline resumed flights between the Sunshine Coast and Sydney after an absence of several years.

Ms Dalessio said there was already demonstrable demand for flights to the southern capitals.

Will you take advantage of the extra flights to the Coast?

No, I never fly from Sunshine Coast Airport.

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

"The reason we're back is that the Coast is growing so much and the demand for Sydney and Melbourne has been proven by other carriers that are here and there's a real opportunity to offer a premium product for the Qantas service," she said.

Qantas will run a Boeing 717 on the Melbourne route which at 110 seats is smaller than the Jetstar 180-seat aircraft but offers both business and economy class.

Ms Dalessio said the Sunshine Coast had a large number of frequent flyer residents who would be interested in a premium service.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was "delighted" about the new flights which were "a real boon to the area" which would expose the Sunshine Coast brand across braoder markets.

Visit Sunshine Coast acting chief executive officer Simon Latchford said the announcement was vote of confidence boost inthe Coast.

He said Victoria was the prime domestic market for the Coast at the moment but the new flights also strategically opened the Coast up to global exposure through Qantas' international connections.

"It's not just about visitation. It's also about prying into the internaiotnal market that is Qantas so that all of a sudden, we've got from a small domestic location to somewhere that's acknowledged on a global scale," he said.

  • The seasonal Melbourne to Sunshine Coast services will run from December 16, 2016 through to January 21, 2017 with return flights scheduled at various times operating on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday each week.
  • Tickets for Melbourne to Sunshine Coast services will go on sale August 2, 2016.
  • The additional Sydney to Sunshine Coast Services will commence from October 30.
  • From October 30, Qantas will run an extra service from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast on Saturdays, departing at 9.40am and arriving at 10.15am, and leaving the Coast at 11am to arrive in Sydney at 1.40pm.
