Inmates under police guard after injured in prison ‘assault’
TWO prisoners are recovering under police guard in the Rockhampton Hospital after what is believed to have been an assault at the Capricornia Correctional Centre on Saturday.
The incident happened about 12.25pm.
One of the inmates is believed to have suffered facial injuries.
The police said they were unable to comment on correctional service matters and attempts to contact the Department of Justice yesterday were unsuccessful.
The weekend incident comes on the back of recent reports of overcrowding at the Etna Creek facility.
There were 504 prisoners in the correctional facility north of Rockhampton in May, despite corrections' figures revealing it only has 410 "built beds" or cells for inmates.
The 504 figure is 60 more inmates than it held two years ago.
The corrections' website lists Capricornia's total capacity at 498, suggesting it was six over its full capability.
