IT'S NOT often that the Pope is upstaged at his own show but that's exactly what happened when two children interrupted his general audience at the Vatican.
Pope Francis was about to give his speech to the crowd when a young boy, oblivious to the magnitude of the event, wandered onstage and began stealing the limelight.
In footage of the moment, the boy wanders around stage and even tries to grab a Swiss guardsman's glove, which receives a round of applause from the crowd.
Several attempts are made to retrieve the boy, but those hopes are dashed when he's joined by a young girl - the two holding hands and wandering around as officials continue the ceremony.
However, the Pope seems to take the disturbance in his stride, even referencing the rambunctious pair in his speech.
"This child cannot speak. He is mute," the Pope tells the crowd. "But he can communicate … This started me thinking: he is free. Unruly, but free."
